Core Judo is a community dojo in the heart of San Mateo dedicated to teaching the art of judo to teens and adults of all experience levels. Whether you're stepping onto the mat for the first time or sharpening competition skills, our instructors meet you where you are.
Judo โ the "gentle way" โ builds physical strength, mental discipline, and lifelong confidence. Our classes emphasize proper technique, respect, and a welcoming environment that makes training both challenging and rewarding.
Core Judo shares a home with Core Taekwondo, an award-winning martial arts school in San Mateo. Together we offer a full range of martial arts programs under one roof.

Ages 13 โ 17
A structured program designed for teens that builds physical fitness, self-defense skills, and mental focus. Students learn throws, groundwork, and competition fundamentals in a supportive group setting.
Ages 18 & up
Open to all adult skill levels โ beginner through advanced. Classes cover traditional judo techniques alongside conditioning, sparring, and the philosophy behind the sport. A great full-body workout and community.
Meet the Sensei
Paul C.
Head Instructor
Sensei Paul is a shodan (first-degree black belt) in judo with over 10 years of competitive experience on the mat. Dedicated to the holistic development of practitioners, he focuses on teaching the fundamentals of traditional Kodokan judo, emphasizing proper technique, safety, and respect. As head instructor of Core Judo, he has fostered a supportive, family-friendly environment focused on character development and personal growth. Sensei Paul is passionate about tailoring training to suit everyone from first-time students to seasoned competitors, ensuring every student feels confident and welcomed.
Justin H.
Instructor
Sensei Justin brings over 30 years of martial arts experience across judo, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, wrestling, and taekwondo. He is passionate about making the art of judo accessible to students of all ages, emphasizing technical precision and safety. A newaza specialist, he remains an active competitor on the Veterans and Masters circuits in judo and BJJ respectively.
